Sens Continue To Struggle Against Avs Noah Borer (HV) The last time the Ottawa Senators lost 5 games in a row at home was nearly 9
years ago.
The Senators tried to stop that tonight against the Colorado Avalanche. The
Avalanche
started their season off with 2 straight over time losses against the
Minnesota Wild, and
the Vancouver Canucks, both of them a score of 3 2. That was not the way Colorado
wanted
to start their season off. The Senators haven’t exactly had the perfect
start either. Going 2 4,
losing 6 0 nothing against their division rivals the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Tonight both teams
battled it out, the Ottawa Senators with a little bit of help on the power
play with Joe Corvo,
back in the line up after missing the first 6 games of the season with a
broken foot. The Ottawa
Senators came out flying in the first period with many great chances,
and the puck in the Colorado
zone for most of the first period. Both goaltenders, Martin Gerber, of the
Ottawa Senators, and
Jose Theodore, of Colorado both stood their ground in the first period.
Colorado started getting
a little bit of momentum mid way through the second which is when Joe Sakic
opened the scoring
with his 3rd goal of the season. That is when the Colorado Avalanche started
to skate and get
most of their chances. In fact Colorado outshot Ottawa 20-7 in their
domination of the second period.
Karlis Skrastins, the defenceman from Riga, Latvia
played a good strong
game and had many blocked shots. He limiting the teams amount of
giveaways. He looked
very confident in the early going, helping his team get the puck out of the
Colorado zone. At 16:44 into the 2nd period Brad Richardson scored his 3rd goal of the
season, it was the
best possible time for him to get it. It was the game winner and
short handed. While Ottawa is having trouble scoring on the power play having scored only once this season in 35 attempts that short-handed goal was their third given up this season. Late in period 3 Dany Heatly scored to make it 2 1, the Senators looked like they were going
to score but Theodorekept that from happening. After the game Brad Richardson said "Ya we seemed
to get our legs,
Jose kept us in it, we found our skating legs, and turned it on. That's the
kind of game we need to play".
Joel Quenneville, Colorado's head coach said that he thought that the 2nd
period was "the best period we've
played all year". Mike Fisher said that "the team isn't playing the way we
know that we can play", he also said
"things are just kind of snowballing, we got to find our way to get out of
that, and get it out of our heads".
Wade Redden responded to if the team is losing what it had last year he said
"I don't think its the system thats
the problem, I don't think we have really changed our philosophy, I don't
know we are really not on the same page".
So you know that when the Assistant captain says that the team is not on the
same page, that the coach Bryan Murray
has a lot of work to get this team on the same page. Hopefully, for the
Ottawa Senators a winning page.
The Ottawa Senators play at home again on Saturday night against the New
Jersey Devils. The Colorado Avalanche
play against Jose Theodore’s old team the Montreal Canadiens. It is the first
time Theodore will be back in Montreal after being traded last year.
When asked about the game on Saturday Jose said "obviously it is going to be
special,
I have been in that organization for 12 years, its going to be fun and
exciting to go back to Montreal".
NOTE: Wade Redden played is 700th career game. 2nd in Senators history
behind Daniel Alfredsson's 712 games.
Karlis Skrastins played his 440th straight game.
